When you know that things cannot continue in the way they have been, you ask yourself, how do I find the courage to make a positive change in my life?  You may feel a lot of self-doubt and then here comes all the self-talk of reasons why this won’t work. But if you can find just one positive reason to change, then you have within you the motivation to take the next step.

Where to start?

There are so many teachings on change and behavior modification and letting go. But where is the best place to start? What are the first steps? How do you know you won’t disappoint others or yourself in the process?  These are just a few of the multitude of questions that arise when you first start to think about making a change in your life. Just know that these are normal questions.

Often, when I find myself afraid of making a change I remind myself of this phrase, “Is it possible, (is it just possible,) that life (God, the Universe, etc.) has more to offer us than we could ever take for ourselves?” (Michael Singer from “The Untethered Soul”).  And when I think about this sentence, I am reminded that God is good and wants me to feel love, joy, peace, etc.

So why would I choose anything less?

Well, because it’s more comfortable sometimes to be in a state of worry or complacency than to venture out into the unknown. Only leaders have that kind of courage, right?  But if I can find one moment of willingness to try another way of responding to life’s stressors, then I might just see a better way of being.  I might begin to become aware of my true potential.

Taking the first step

Maybe you’re thinking that it’s possible for your life to be easier, lighter, and more manageable.  Maybe you are ready to find the courage to make that positive change in your life. You can continue with your day-to-day lifestyle and feel very comfortable with the familiar, or you can make the choice to try something new, something unfamiliar.

Ask yourself, am I brave enough to do this?  The unknown is scary if you’ve been in the same rut for a long time.  But just know that once you try even one step toward change, the neural pathways in your brain change. These pathways are as deep as the amount of time you’ve been doing the same thing over and over. And once you take a step in a different direction, a new pathway is laid out. It’s not deep yet, but it can become deep if you stay the course with your new choice over and over again.  And this is how new habits are created.

If you’re enlightened by any of this, then I’m guessing you may already have a vision of what life could be like for you.  And even with this vision in place, you may not be 100% ready to change.  It’s just a vision, it’s just an idea.  And creative as it is and as much positive energy as you may feel about it, it doesn’t mean that you’re going to jump right in. But, you’re different now.  And the way you look at your life is different. You’ve become a little or a lot more aware. And now you cannot go back to not seeing it. This vision exists within you and now you can choose whether you want to pursue it or not.  That’s the point, it’s totally your choice.

Making one small change

You may even test the waters with one new behavior that’s more in line with your vision. And if you repeat this behavior a few times, you will notice that life is lighter, you feel a bit more freedom and empowerment. It can be exciting to begin to realize that you are in control of your life. You are a creator! All it takes is a vision and a little courage.
